Department: Mathematics The faculty and staff of the Department of Mathematics at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, are seeking two faculty members, at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor to join our department beginning in Fall 2020. Our major need is in statistics or data science, but applicants from all fields are encouraged to apply. The department, which offers both bachelor's and master's degrees, has been growing for several years and we plan to build on this. Successful applicants must be able to teach mathematics courses at all levels, including graduate courses, first-year mathematics courses, and co-requisite support courses. We expect applicants to have sensitivity to diverse populations, to possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and to show the desire to increase student success and retention.
Position Summary: Tenure-stream faculty in the Department of Mathematics have an average teaching load of 12 credit-hours per semester. Faculty conducting research will have a reduced average load of 9 credit-hours per semester. The initial salary will be commensurate with experience.
Education and Experience: Required: 1. PhD in Mathematics, with at least 18 hours of graduate statistics courses; or a PhD in Statistics with at least 18 hours of graduate mathematics courses; or a PhD in a closely related area, with at least 18 graduate hours in mathematics. Extraordinary candidates with at least 18 graduate hours in mathematics will be considered regardless of field. For at least one position, we will require at least 18 hours of graduate statistics courses. 2. Record of teaching excellence in the mathematical sciences and a desire to teach mathematics at all levels, from entry-level to graduate. 3. Must demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, gender identity, cultural, disability, religious, and ethnic backgrounds of faculty, staff, and students, as well as sensitivity to historically underrepresented groups, and groups who may have experienced discrimination.
Desired: 1. Post-graduate experience in industry, or experience in a leadership role in an academic setting. 2. Experience teaching under-represented groups and diverse populations. 3. Experience and interest in curriculum and material development. 4. Experience recruiting students from previously underrepresented populations.
About the Department of Mathematics at Lamar University: Located in the Lucas Building on the Lamar University campus in Beaumont, Texas, the Department of Mathematics has seven full professors, seven associate professors, two assistant professors, and eight full-time instructors, as well as a talented pool of adjunct instructors. The department offers a full range of courses in applied and pure mathematics, mathematics education for elementary and secondary school certification, and statistics. Degree programs provide flexibility of course selection, according to a student's career path. Advising is integral to success, consequently, faculty members assist with scheduling and career planning throughout students' undergraduate and graduate years.
