The Department of Life Sciences, in the College of Arts and Sciences, at Texas A&M University-San Antonio invites applications for a Laboratory Manager in the Biological Sciences. The successful candidate will be broadly trained in the Biological Sciences and be willing to work in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.Â
The Laboratory Manager (LM) is the primary person responsible for the operations of teaching laboratories. The LM coordinates purchasing, distribution, oversight, and maintenance of supplies and equipment in departmental teaching laboratories. The LM directly reports to the Department Chair, but works closely with Program and Course Coordinators, and instructors, to cover departmental needs by training and overseeing a crew of graduate TAs, undergraduate student workers, and work study students who set-up and maintain the teaching labs. When these duties are not covered by students, the LM must be able to perform these tasks. The laboratory manager also ensures efficient operations of equipment in teaching laboratories. No teaching responsibilities are associated with this position.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Prepares teaching laboratories at all levels of instruction, including instruments, consumable supplies, and chemicals with the help of graduate TAs and undergraduate student workers.
Supervises TAs, undergraduate student workers and work study students in the laboratory and manages their schedules, duties, and tasks.
Organizes laboratory supplies in teaching labs and stockrooms. Maintains files with inventory of equipment, instruments, and chemicals.
Ensures teaching lab spaces and prep-rooms are kept clean and well organized.
Monitors budget for operating and maintenance for the Biology laboratory courses.
Re-stocks supplies, places and receives orders, and files documentation of received supplies in teaching laboratories.
Assists in managing the greenhouse, animals used in experimentation (IACUC), and preserved collections used in laboratory courses.
Assists in instructing students on the use instrumentation. Maintains and arranges repairs of laboratory and field equipment
Provides support to research faculty by placing and receiving orders.
Attends and participates in departmental meetings or other meetings pertaining to laboratory matters.
Maintains updated trainings and certifications in laboratory safety procedures. Disposes laboratory waste according to safety regulations. Ensures safety procedures are carried out appropriately and issues are addressed in a timely manner. Adheres to Federal, State, and Texas A&M University System procedures, policies, and safety regulations.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelorâ™s degree in Biology or equivalent field.
Broad training across biological disciplines.
At least one year of experience in laboratory management.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Masterâ™s degree in Biology or equivalent field
Three years or more of related experience in laboratory management.
Experience with preserved specimen collections
Experience with laboratory courses in microbiology, molecular biology, and genetics
Experience with IACUC and animal care.
Experience with Institutional Biosafety approval processes.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
Knowledge of scientific equipment associated with ecology, organismal biology, genetics, microbiology, and life sciences.
Knowledge of proper preparation, handling, and disposal of biologicals, chemicals, and glassware.
Knowledge of standard laboratory safety procedures, including IACUC practices.
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Managing and preparing for a growing department.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding.
Excellent written and oral communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Ability to perform light to moderate physical activity such as carrying and stacking boxes
Some evening and weekend work may be required. Driverâ™s license and ability to drive 15-passenger vans.
